Whether it’s a monthly supply of toilet paper or a pricey package, porch piracy is a $20 billion-a-year problem. And an entrepreneur behind a line of freezable, foldable coolers and lunch bags is fighting back.
According to Inc., Melissa Kieling, CEO of PackIt, is launching her latest venture, Hyve – a safe deposit box where delivery people can drop packages when the customer is not home, using instructions provided when placing an order online.
The box is battery and solar-powered, offering 18 months’ battery life with no charge required. Being Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, it can be managed in an app. The box is not a permanent structure and can be moved off the customer’s porch when not expecting a package.
Pirates trying to break into the box will be met with a blaring alarm, alerting both customers and their neighbors to the attempted theft.
Kieling is testing the system with pilot orders this spring. If all goes well, Hyve is expected to launch fully in June or July.
