AmiSight 3/31: Tariffs Hit Small Businesses: Cost-Cutting and Expansion Delays

While President Trump admits that his tariff hikes could cause the economy “a little disturbance,” some small businesses are facing a full-on tsunami.
Typically lacking large cash reserves or the leverage to negotiate significant discounts with suppliers, small businesses do not have the same range of options or ability to navigate a trade war as America’s largest corporations. As a result, many are cutting costs, putting expansion plans on hold, and may eventually be forced to cut jobs.
Confidence among small businesses dropped again in March after already plunging in February, according to a survey of small-business owners conducted for The Wall Street Journal by Vistage Worldwide. Tariffs remain a major concern, with nearly two-thirds of those surveyed stating that tariffs and other trade issues would harm their business, while only 8% believed they would benefit.
Some small companies with U.S.-based manufacturing say tariffs could drive long-term business growth as prospective customers seek to save money. However, for many other manufacturers, the unpredictable nature of tariffs has led to paralysis.
